There are many different types of mobile phone standards,
such as GSM, CDMA and TDMA. Each carrier (mobile phone service provider)
uses one or more of these standards in the phones it sells to subscribers.
In most cases, IMU is used with only a single
GSM modem. Most carriers today have inter-operability arrangements, so
that no matter what mobile provider or what standard is used, IMU can
receive the message.
Below are details about what types of mobile phone
standards that Pangolin's Interactive Messaging Unlimited system directly and indirectly supports.
GSM and CDMA directly
IMU provides direct connection to GSM modems and thus
can easily receive mobile messages sent by GSM phones. IMU also provides
direct connection to CDMA modems and thus can receive mobile message sent
by CDMA phones.
Since IMU supports direct connection to GSM and
CDMA modems, it can be said that IMU "directly supports" GSM and CDMA.
TDMA directly or indirectly
IMU does not support direct connection to any TDMA phone
or modem. However, IMU may still be able to receive messages sent by TDMA
phones, as long as
- IMU can be directly connected to a TDMA message
server, or
- the TDMA mobile provider (carrier) has
inter-operability arrangements with GSM and/or CDMA mobile providers.
In this way, it can be said that IMU "directly
supports TDMA" when using a direct message server connection", and that
IMU indirectly supports TDMA" when using a GSM or CDMA modem for message
reception.
Mixing modems
IMU supports multiple simultaneous connections. These can be all GSM, all CDMA or any mixture of the two.
If you want to receive messages from GSM and CDMA users,
it may be necessary to have both modem types connected to IMU. However, in
most parts of the world, GSM and CDMA operators do have
"inter-operability" arrangements and thus messages sent from a GSM phone
can be received by a CDMA phone and vice-versa.
