Here are some ways to generate SMS revenue, increase usage and develop
targeted databases:
Interactive contests
Callers send SMS text to enter a contest; every 100th caller wins a
small prize while one will win a grand prize. Return SMS messages can
tell the outcome ("Sorry, you did not win this time. Call again to
increase your chances." or "Congratulations, you are the 100th caller!")
or provide marketing messages ("Thanks for entering, and be sure to try
new Quench soft drink").
Interactive information
Callers send SMS to find out more about a product or service. Printed
or TV ads can have keywords. Pangolin's IMU identifies messages
containing the keywords, and can send SMS or generate a voice "Please
Call" list.
E-mail response
Callers send SMS containing their e-mail address. Additional
information and links can then be sent to their e-mail address.
Text messaging
charges
For all incoming SMS messages, an additional
per-call charge can be levied. For example, voters for American Idol were
charged 10 cents per SMS vote; AT&T received 8 million SMS votes during
the second season. In Europe, fees go as high as 50 cents per vote.
This per-call charge generates
revenues, can help to hold down high call volumes, and can qualify callers
so they have a genuine interest in the product or event.
