How IMU software works
Step 3: Message handling
The web page
How IMU software works lists the
seven basic steps needed to set up Interactive Messaging Unlimited
software. The discussion below goes into detail about step 3, Message
Handling.

3 Set up message handling
You probably don't want to
display every message that comes in. That's why Pangolin's IMU has a
comprehensive set of filtering criteria. Out of the box, these are
already set up for general use.
If you have specific needs, you can set up the
following tabs:

3General tab
This sets an optional "welcome" message. The message is sent
once to each caller, in response to their first SMS text message.
Note that users can easily select their nickname and
desired color for their messages. For example, a user could set the
nickname "bandfan1" and see their messages scroll in red.

3Sender Filter tab
You may want to accept messages only from certain
countries, area codes or phone numbers. Similarly, there may be certain countries, area codes
or phone numbers you want to block.
The way this is done, you specify the first part of the
permitted or prohibited number. You can specify just the country code;
the country code plus area code; the country, area and exchange; or an
entire number.
In the example at left, calls are permitted from U.S.
area codes 321, 386, and 407, plus a specific phone number from
Belgium. All other Belgium (country code 32) calls are prohibited.

3Interval Filter tab
You can block messages that come too frequently from
the same phone.
If you wish, you can send an automatic message back to
the user telling them how long they must wait until they can call
again.

3Offensive Words
tab
This tab is is where you designate a list of offensive
words -- words that you don't want to appear in displayed messages.
These can be curse words or, for legal reasons might be
trademarks or trade names. For example, at an event sponsored by
Chevrolet, you might add "Ford" to the list
Note that IMU is quite intelligent. If you add an
asterisk (*) in front of a word, the software will look for just the
objectionable word alone ("ford") plus any variants ("f-ord", "f/0*r
d").

3Offensive Message Filter tab
IMU gives you a variety of ways to handle offensive
messages. These range from fully manual (allow all messages) to fully
automatic (block offensive messages).
In addition, you can leave offensive words alone, you
can replace them with character strings like "****", or you can block
the message entirely.

3Warnings tab
If someone sends a message with an offensive word, you
can optionally warn them by sending a reply SMS message.
If they continue, you can optionally ban them, and send
a message to let them know how long the ban will last.
The system will automatically allow their messages back
in after the ban is over, and it will send an SMS notification
message.

3Visualization tab
This feature is for users who do not specify a nickname
when they send their message. It generates a numeric identifier from
the caller's telephone number.
This keeps the actual number private while also
providing an "automatic nickname".
