PangolinSMS, a
leading provider of SMS text and MMS picture messaging systems, exhibited SMS Interactive HDTV
applications at the NATPE trade show. Pangolin demonstrated its Interactive
Messaging Unlimited (IMU) system, which was used in
the United States’ first
nationwide Interactive HDTV program.
During the program, music fans could interact
with each other via SMS mobile text messaging about the band Yellowcard,
in a special nationwide program broadcast before a concert special.
Pangolin’s IMU software made it easy to display a live text chat
session in the same HD screen as other windows: a documentary about
Yellowcard, SMS voting, scrolling text, and animated advertising graphics.
“We were pleased to
bring interactive discussion panels and Interactive TV to NATPE
attendees,” stated Pangolin president William R. Benner, Jr. “With just a
simple PC and cellular modem (or SMS message servers), anyone can manage
SMS text messaging conversations and project them on video screens or TV
chat programs. Our system can build the entire application, including
associated video windows serving programs and advertisements that can run
attended or automatically.”
In addition, Pangolin announced that iHollywood Forum also
used IMU during discussion panels at
the NATPE Mobile++ conference in Las Vegas. Audience members in person and those watching a Web simulcast asked questions via SMS
text messaging. The questions were displayed
at the session using large-screen video projectors. This made it easy
for the panelists to choose their favorite questions and for the audience
to see what had already been asked. The iHollywood Forum found it to be a very
effective way to get widespread audience participation.
"SMS Messaging at our conferences has added a
vital interactive component - our audience can query from their seats and
the speakers appreciate the convenience and feedback,” states Mike
Navarre, vice president, sales and marketing, iHollywood Forum /
MobileTech Forum. “Pangolin has expertly handled the voting and speaker
questions - and our audience of executives from carriers, handsets and
content are the leaders in the industry."
Interactive Messaging Unlimited
(IMU) runs on
any standard PC connected to one or more cellular modems or other message
sources (such as dedicated SMS message servers). Incoming SMS
text and MMS picture messages are filtered for content and then queued for
display.
The resulting chat
and voting sessions can then be presented in public on video projections,
on cable TV chat programs and even on the side of a building with laser
projectors. IMU content creators can quickly create professional
looking video backgrounds, on which the various video, SMS chat, SMS
voting and other elements appear.
IMU is used in the U.S. and Europe in stadiums, festivals, trade shows, discos and
nightclubs, and to support major musical talent such as Yellowcard. The web chatting feature is demonstrated at
Pangolin’s website, and can be seen at:

ABOUT PANGOLIN’S IMU
Interactive Messaging Unlimited
allows large-scale public displays of SMS text and picture messages.
It processes incoming messages and outputs them to video, for use
in venues such as concerts, nightclubs, trade shows, cable TV chat
channels, and special events. IMU can even control laser graphics
projectors, to create huge scrolling text messages on the sides of
buildings or mountains.
Pangolin’s IMU was used at the
prestigious
iWireless World conference in Los Angeles. During presentations,
audience members submitted questions for the speakers, by sending SMS text
messages. These were displayed on video projectors, either during the
presentation itself or afterwards, during the Q&A session. Both modes
worked extremely well, producing thoughtful questions throughout the
presentations.
ABOUT PANGOLIN
Pangolin is the world leader in laser display
systems. Over 80% of professional laser shows, worldwide, use Pangolin’s
Lasershow Designer 2000 system. LD2000 has won
more technical and artistic international awards than all other laser
display systems combined.
Pangolin’s IMU system for SMS texting was
first implemented for laser projectors. It was later expanded to handle
video. A single IMU video screen can have various windows with live or
recorded video, SMS text messages, SMS voting polls, scrolling text,
advertising, and graphics. More information is at
